Nordic Walks week commencing
20th January, 2020

Oh yes, there are a few puddles out there!   You hardy bunch of Nordic Walkers marched over 4 miles on Thursday through the mud and the wet for a well deserved cuppa at the end.  Just a reminder with all the rain and this time of year in general, wearing the correct footwear is important.   Boots are ideal so the puddles don’t breach the tops and this prevents soggy feet!  Gaters are great to protect your trousers and tops of your boots/shoes also and if you’re interested in some Spats, which you can see above in red and blue, here is a website to take a look. http://www.spatsleisuregear.com/

As you know we have Beginners Technique course going on at the moment and such a lovely bunch of folks they are too!  However, one Newbie who just finished his Technique course is Paul M.  Welcome Paul, we look forward to seeing you out there on the trails!

OUR SPEED GROUPS EXPLAINED
We are so fortunate to have Walk Leaders.  Without them, it would be difficult to cover all the different speed groups and offer so many walks. In the early days it was just me and I did a lot of whistling back for the faster walkers which worked well when I had no other options to keep the group together.  But now…..we have speed groups which has made it great for both the walkers and the Walk Leaders.  This concerns the Moderate classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

If you are struggling and falling way behind, think about dropping down a group to build your speed up before trying the faster group.  This is very important as trying to push yourself too much could eventually lead to injury and also, it’s just not as enjoyable to struggle so much.   Alternatively, if you feel the pace is too easy and you’re not finding it very challenging, move up a group (sorry Howard, there’s no where faster for you to go unless I start running for the whole session!)

But most importantly being in the correct group really helps the Walk Leaders who try to keep the group together.  If the group stretches out too much it is difficult for the Walk Leader to manage as they will lose sight of the faster walkers if they’re having to drop back.   As safety is our priority for all our walkers, you can see how important keeping everyone in sight is for our Walk Leaders.

So if I approach you in the coming days requesting you to change group, please don’t see this as a negative change if you move back a group.  This will be for your safety and enjoyment as well as your fellow walkers and in turn will help my Walk Leaders who, as you’ll all agree, do a fantastic job and give their time so generously.

Thanks everyone.

Great to be back after having a nasty cough for the past couple of weeks.  There’s nothing like getting back out there on the trails; getting some exercise and fresh air is better than any medicine.   Thanks for all the well wishes during this time.   I must also thank you all for the lovely Christmas present of the gift card you all contributed to.   It means a great deal and I will enjoy buying some new walking gear!

THURSDAY’S CLASS
This week the Thursday class is starting at 10:30am.  This enables us to have a cuppa afterwards at the pub when they open at 11:30am  Yay!  As with most paths this time of year, there will be some muddy bits, so make sure you wear the appropriate footwear.  Thanks.

How strange to be typing 2020!  Another decade beginning and hoping it is filled with great walks and adventures for you all.  It is January that many of us make resolutions to make changes in our lives.  For me there’s nothing more important than health and well being.  I know you’ll all agree that doing things that encourage and promote optimum health, both mental and physical, has to be a good thing.  So whatever is on your list of things to work on, make this a priority.  Your health is your wealth!

WEDNESDAY WOMBLES
So excited to trial a new class starting on Wednesday 29th January (which is incidentally Tom Selleck’s birthday!) and we’ll be trialling this class for a month to see if there is enough interest.  The Wednesday Wombles will start at 12pm each week and be in different locations, varying distances and offering pub lunches/cafe stops. The walks will be graded each week according to difficulty as per your regular weekly walks.  If there is enough interest; the Wednesday Wombles will become a regular class on our timetable. Yipeee!

THURSDAY’S WALK AT THE FOREST CENTRE
As the Forest Centre now charges £2 for parking, I will offset this cost by charging just £3 for the class this Thursday.

Time to think about what you want to achieve in 2020.  No matter what your fitness goals are, we are here to help and support you. See you all out there on the trails!

You guys!  Surprising me completely with so many of you coming on the Pop Up walk in Woburn last Friday!  It was fantastic to have so many of you tackle the muddy Woburn walk with me.  Thanks for coming along.

We had some great walks last week and it’s so good to see you keeping your walking routine going even through the holidays.  This will be a great start to your New Year and your continued health and fitness journey.  When I say health I don’t just mean the physical kind, but also mentally.   Getting out walking is the best thing you can do for your mind.  See it as I do, a therapy session with nature!

Our Christmas dinners and lunch were all last week and I had the best time with you all as well as enjoying such great food!  The Cranfield bunch above were on top form as usual and the following evening was the Striders dinner at Fratelli’s. Yummy!  As my waistline expanded more, I then had Christmas lunch the next day at The Chequers with you and again, so much fun, great food and laughs.  Thanks to all of you who joined in the meals this Christmas (around 70 of you!) and look forward to many more socials next year.  Yay!

Week commencing 16th December 2019

Nordic Walks week commencing
16th December, 2019

I’m back from my fab holiday in Canada where it was a winter wonderland and truly magical as you can see from my photo’s.  Cross Country skiing was awesome and definitely the Nordic Walking Technique was a huge advantage and helped tremendously.  It had been 16 years since I last cross country skied and I forgot what a wonderful activity it is, even when falling over!  Using the upper body so much and double poling on ski’s was great and definitely a full body workout.  I ached all over for the next few days!  It made me want to put together a couple of Cross Country skiing holidays for the future.  I know a few of you have mentioned this to me in the past so we’ll make it happen but probably not until early 2021.

Despite the rainy weather on Saturday morning, so many of you showed up for your Nordic class which was so great to see!   Returning from my holiday and seeing such a great turnout in the rain was fantastic.  Thanks for making that extra effort when it would have been so easy to have stayed at home.   Your commitment to your health and fitness will pay dividends!

This is why we are not taking any breaks over the Christmas/New year holidays, we want you to keep up the great work you are doing in your fitness journey and this is especially important over the holidays where we all indulge a bit more!  It also keeps up your regular routine of exercise which can be hard to get back into after a break.  We have a Pop up walk in Woburn in the midst of the holidays and this will be our favourite 3 miler with a nice cuppa afterwards.

This Saturday we are having our Festive walks!   We’re splitting the walks into two and having the Striders and Mod 1’s walk together and then the Mod 2’s and 3’s and the faster Gentle walkers in the second group.  The walks are the same as your usual walks though the Striders will be a tad slower as will the Mod 2’s.  Wear your festive outfits, hats and jumpers for this fun walk with a warming social at the end at the Hub cafe afterwards.  There will be Hot Chocolate, mulled wine and yummy treats for all.   The walks are open to your family and friends too who can join in the fun and they can walk for free though a donation would be appreciated for our collection, which this year is for Dogs Trust.   Dogs are also welcome as long as they are on a lead.  Woohoo!
This week we also have our Walk2Fitness Christmas Dinners and lunch!   For our Cranfield Christmas dinner on the 18th, can all those attending have their dinner money ready so we can pay easily at the end of the evening.  Bringing cash for this will help tremendously.  Thanks everyone.  Also for the Cranfield Bunch, a small wrapped pressie of no more than £5 would be great for our present game!  Can I thank Bob (Old Goat Strider Bob) and Denise for helping me so much with organising the Christmas socials this year.  It saved me alot of time and meant I didn’t have to worry whilst on holiday.  Thanks guys.

Christmas Dinner dates & times are as follows:

Tuesday 17th December, 6:45pm – Cranfield Bunch at Oso’s
Wednesday 18th December, 7:30pm – Striders Dinner at Fratelli’s

Week commencing 9th December 2019

Nordic Walks commencing 9th December, 2019

This week we have some chilly temps so make sure you are wrapped up!  As you know, 10 minutes into your walk your heart rate will have increased causing you to warm up; so layers are a great idea.   Layers trap heat keeping you warm but if you find you are getting too hot, you can remove a layer to be more comfortable.  If you’re wearing bulky tops and coats this will impede your technique as will thick gloves, so dress smart for your walks. Remember Nordic Walking is a full body workout so don’t over dress as if out on a little stroll in the countryside…..we mean business when we’re out and about, we take no prisoners!

JUNE’S POP UP CRAFT SALE
A reminder that this Monday morning at 9:30am at Cranfield Village Hall car park, June will be having a small Pop up craft sale. Come along prior to your usual Monday workout walk!

Below you will see how to correctly strike the ground with your foot.  This is something that is important when Nordic Walking as it can mean all the difference with your comfort.  Getting this right is imperative to achieving the correct technique and it will lengthen your stride.  Striking the ground with a bent knee and/or flat foot can cause long term problems so please make sure you are rolling from your heel to toe.  Striking the ground with your heel first keeps the knee straight which is the correct technique.  Think about this the next time you’re out on your walk and make any necessary adjustments if needed.  I will be on hand from the 14th if you have any questions.

Week commencing 2nd December 2019

Nordic Walks week commencing
2nd December, 2019

Hope you all had a good week!  The Walk Leaders have shared their great photos with me and looks like you-re all working hard!  Good to see!

For all my new walkers; if you are finding the group you are walking in too easy or too difficult, just let the Walk Leader know and they can make sure you go up into the right group.  You want to challenge yourself but not to the point you are uncomfortable and trying to keep up all the time.  Hills are great!  Hills, though sometimes challenging and tough are fantastic for your heart and lung health and getting your heart rate up several times during the session is how you will increase your fitness level! Embrace the Hills!!

If you’re interested in buying your own poles, have a look around at the other poles the walkers have when you come along and they will be happy to show you.   Go to https://nordicwalking.co.uk/products/2/ to have a look at the online store.  It is unlikely you will find poles in the shops as they usually only carry Trekking poles.   If in doubt, ask Walk Leader Gordon who is our resident expert on  poles!  Thanks.

PLEASE CHECK THE WEBSITE WWW.WALK2FITNESS.CO.UK BEFORE YOU GO ON A WALK FOR ALL THE LATEST INFORMATION ON CHANGES OR CANCELLATIONS.  THANKS.

An amendment to the date our June is having her POP UP Craft sale at the Cranfield Village Hall car park.  This will now be on Monday the 9th December at 930am.  This will be prior to our regular Cranfield walk. Please come along early and peruse her wonderful items which are all home made gems and make wonderful gifts for friends and family.
