Week commencing 15 April 2019

Nordic Walks commencing 15th April, 2019

Beautiful Spring time walks were had by all last week and we managed to dodge the inclement weather too!  Thanks to all of you who came along to enjoy our fab walks.   The evening walks proved a big hit and those who attended really worked hard, especially in the HIIT class (picture below) which was tough.  Well done guys!
Congratulations to Martin who completed his Walk Leader qualification last week!  We look forward to many great walks with you Martin.  Martin will be joining, Gordon, Paul, Denise and Rachel to our Walk Leaders Team.  Without the Walk Leaders kindly volunteering their time, we couldn’t offer so many walks; so thank you guys. (Cake courtesy of our Sheelagh!)

STRIDERS TUESDAY
This Tuesday we will be meeting at 8:30am for a nice rollercoaster walk from Lidlington.  Meeting by the playground on the main road through Lidlington across from Lombard Street.  Just park on the side of the road.  Drink after at the Hub as usual.

GROUPS & PACES
If you are unsure of what group you should be in, please ask me or a Walk Leader and we will assist you.  A reminder:

Moderate 1 – Fast with hills (challenging)
Moderate 2 – slower pace than Mod 1 not as many big hills.
Moderate 3 – slower pace than Mod 2 mostly flat, only odd undulations.
Gentle Plus – slower pace than Mod 3 and mostly flat the whole time.

SPEAKING UP
Please let us know if you are in any difficulty so we can take care of you.  If you need to stop for any reason (doing laces up, having a drink, need a breather, shoot off to the loo!) please speak up so we can be sure you are okay.  If you aren’t near a Walk Leader, let one of the other walkers know so we know where you are at all times.  You are why we do our walks so we want you to have the best time, so just let us know if you need to stop anytime or are struggling.  Thanks Walkers, Elaine xx

Our Caron is kindly supporting Ability Bow, our current Charity by offering facials/make overs using products from the Tropic range which are natural, vegan and cruelty-free products and are just amazing!  If you’d like to book in with Caron, she can come to yours or you can go to hers and you will have the most wonderful time being spoiled with a lovely natural make over/facial.  As mentioned, Caron is giving her time for Ability Bow for the next month so is asking for a donation of £3.  There is no sales catch with this, just come and be spoiled!  For more info on Ability Bow’s work, click here: http://www.abilitybow.org/our-work  You can email Caron at caron.brooks@btinternet.com or phone 07941872955 Thanks everyone and a BIG thank you Caron!
Have a fantastic week everyone!
Many thanks,
Elaine

Week commencing 8 April 2019

Nordic Walks commencing 8th April, 2019

A great group of Nordic Walkers came along for the Charity Challenge walk today and we had a great time!  I was blown away by how well the walkers all did on the tough hills!  It just goes to show by putting in all that hard work in our regular classes in Ampthill Park have paid off. Just great effort by everyone.  I want to thank all of you who came along for this Charity walk and for your generosity in supporting Ability Bow.  You raised £185 today, I’m so chuffed!

WEATHER THIS WEEK
So, the Nordic Gods are not in a kind mood for the first part of this week, so please remember to check the website before you leave for the walk to see if there are any cancellations.  Pack your raincoats but keep your fingers crossed we will still manage to get our walks in.

EVENING CLASSES RETURNING THIS WEEK!

Wednesday 5:45pm – West Car Park – 45 minute Workout walk.
Aimed at Moderate 1 & 2 walkers, hills and healthy pace on this great evening walk.

Thursday 5:45pm – West Car Park – 30 minutes
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). All grades welcome for this tough half hour of hillwork.  Ideal for increasing fitness levels and fat burn.

BOTH THE EVENING CLASSES ARE BOOKING CLASSES.

SOME PICTURES FROM TODAY & SATURDAY

Have a fantastic week everyone!
Many thanks,
Elaine

Week commencing 1 April 2019

Nordic Walks commencing 1st April, 2019

A lovely week of walks with some great weather for us.  The Striders upped their game and worked really hard with both speed and hill work.  All my other groups were faster too, especially on Thursday for our 4.5 miler in Silsoe.  Great job everyone.
This week the weather is becoming colder again but hoping the rain won’t return.  Just in case pack a light rain coat and be prepared!  Of course we have our Charity walk on Sunday and I’ve arranged nice dry conditions for us.  Yipee!

ABILITY BOW CHARITY WALK – SUNDAY 10.30AM
BARTON LE CLAY, OLD ROAD MK45 4LF (meet at the park)

You’d be hard pressed to find a walk with so many great views than this one…..well in Bedfordshire anyway!   There are some challenging hills but without them we don’t get the views, so they are worth it!  Our longer walks aren’t races so you can take your time. All the proceeds are going to Ability Bow; the small East London Gym doing such amazing work for those with disabilities and limiting conditions.  The cost is £10 on the day.  Bring a sandwich as we will stop to picnic half way.  This should take 3.5 to 4 hours. Please book on for this walk by Friday.  Thanks guys. The picture below will be on this walk!

THURSDAY’S WALK THIS WEEK
This Thursday Catherine will be leading you around the lake at The Forest Centre so behave yourselves!  As there is no official Walk Leader for this walk it is FREE, however, the Forest Centre now requires payment for parking.  Some of you can carpool if you wish by meeting at the entrance as there are a couple of lay by’s but it’s up to you.  Myself and the Walk Leaders are risk assessing the Peak District walks this week, hence our absence for this walk. Have a fab time though and have a cuppa for me!

SATURDAY & TUESDAY CLASSES
We will be introducing a new format to our Moderate classes on Saturdays and Tuesdays.   When we have four Walk Leaders, the Moderate classes will now be divided into THREE groups instead of two.  This is to keep the groups at more manageable sizes but also will enable you to progress and challenge yourself so you can move on up through the groups as your fitness improves.  This also means we won’t be meeting up half way around anymore so the class will flow better.   MODERATE ONE – Our fast class with some tough hills, is a good pace and challenging.  MODERATE TWO – This class will be a little slower than MOD 1 but still has some hills to keep it interesting.   MODERATE THREE – Will be a bit faster than the Gentle Plus, with easier hills.  Our Gentle Plus will stay as it is but will be flatter with the occasional friendly incline so you don’t talk too much!   I can assist all walkers to find the right group to go into.  Please feel free to ask if you are unsure.
Thanks Walkers.

Have a fantastic week everyone!
Many thanks,
Elaine

Week commencing 25 March 2019

Nordic Walks commencing 25th March, 2019

We had some really good speeds this week especially the Cranfield Bunch.  It’s so rewarding for me to see your fitness improve….as I’m self employed I don’t really give myself financial bonuses (like folks with “proper jobs” receive!), but seeing the effort and determination of all my walkers striving for better health and fitness, no matter the weather, is all the bonus I need….so thank you for your commitment.

THURSDAY’S WALK – WREST PARK

Although we won’t be walking in the Wrest Park itself we will avail ourselves of their splendid cafe after our walk!  The car park is open at 10am so I will meet you all there.  The walk this week will be approx 4.5 miles of wonderful views and as I’ve planned the sun to be shining; it should be a great morning!

LAKE DISTRICT TRIP – SEPTEMBER 9th – 13th
The Lake Distict trip I’m organising is now FULLY BOOKED and I have started a waiting list.  I have now booked and paid the deposits for two gorgeous properties in Windermere which are next door to each other and amazing!  I will be putting together an itinerary soon with Rachel, our Lake District Walk Leader and will let you know soon what is in store for our walking holiday.  I will also let you know costings by next week.   After I go up there and risk assess the walks with Rachel, I will be buzzing to tell you all about it on my return. Exciting!

Have a fantastic week everyone!
Many thanks,
Elaine

Week commencing 18 March 2019

A fabulous Charity walk today with my super Nordic Walkers!   An astonishing last three miles where we managed to get from Eversholt to Woburn in the fastest time I’ve ever done it!  This was due to the threatening clouds all around and the fear of being drenched!   Usually our longer walks are a tad more leisurely but boy, we flew AND we didn’t get wet!  Woohoo!  Check our some pictures of the walk below.  A massive thank you to all of you who came along to support the Ability  Bow charity and with an extra kind donation, we raised£340 – Just fantastic!  Thank you.  Really looking forward to our next one now…..April 7th 10:30am.  Please book before April 5th.

10:30am start this Thursday

The pub opens at 11:30am, hence the later start!

Have a fantastic week everyone!
Many thanks,
Elaine

Week commencing 4 March 2019

The Central car park where the Hub Cafe is in Ampthill Park is undergoing resurfacing for the new car park for the next few weeks; so if you could park at the West car park that would be great.  Therefore, Tuesday Striders classes will be starting from the West Car Park for the next few weeks.  Thanks.

This week I thought we could do with another POP UP walk on Friday.  Barton Springs is a firm favourite and has some spectacular panoramic views.  It has some challenging hills but this just adds to this invigorating walk!  Yay!

This weeks Walks

Have a fantastic week everyone!

MONTE’S TANDOORI
13th March 7pm

Definitely time for another social at Monte’s Tandoori in Cranfield! (116 High St, Cranfield MK43 0DG} This is a lovely little Indian restaurant and we bring our own drinks.  If you’re interested in coming along, please let me know by March 10th. Thanks.

OUR WALK LEADERS

Our Walk Leaders are there to guide you on the walks but they are also there to listen to you if you have any questions or if you feel you’re struggling etc.  Always let the Walk Leaders know if you need to slow down or if you feel a hill is too much for you.  There are always alternative routes we can take to make it easier.  If the walkers are heading up a huge hill that you know is too much for you, just mention it to the Walk Leader as they will always help and give an alternative for you and anyone else who is struggling a bit.  My Walkers don’t mind in the least if anyone has to go an easier way as they all know; that was them once!  There is certainly no shame in taking the easier alternative if you are struggling.  It’s not always the best idea to go with the flow or push yourself too much as this will only lead to injury.   Always know that WE ARE HERE FOR YOU,
 our FAB Nordic Walkers!
THURSDAYS WALK START TIME 10:15AM
This Thursday our walk will start at 10:15am from the Jolly Coopers Pub on Wardhedges Road, Flitton.  This walk has some of the best views in Bedfordshire and is a fun varied walk with only one hill!  This is a stunner!  Hope to see you there.

Nordic Walks commencing 18th February, 2019

So great to see all my Newbie’s doing so well in the classes this past week.  Well done.  I will continue to coach you as needed, to stop any bad habits forming early on and we have regular Workshops too.

It’s fab to be back walking with you all too as I have missed it so much.   Because of my calf strain which I’m still nursing but definitely getting better, I will be postponing the Charity walk we had scheduled for next Sunday from Clophill.  I will announce the new date for this walk shortly.  Sorry.

CORRECT FOOTWEAR
This time of year the ground is often wet and slippy.  Trainers are dangerous with little or no grip in these current conditions.and should only be worn when the ground is dry.
Wearing the correct footwear is imperative to help prevent falls and injury. Having walking boots/shoes with the support you need will allow you to walk with confidence so please ensure you wear them when you come along to the walks.

Nordic Walking & weight loss
You guys all know Denise, my great Walk Leader….some of you may not know however the amazing journey it took her to get to the fitness level she’s at today.  Above shows Denise when she started Nordic Walking with me a few years ago and the transition she went through to become the fit and healthy Wonder woman she is today!  With a good, healthy diet and Nordic Walking you can achieve significant positive changes too.   It’s all down to you and your commitment.  We are here to help you with your health & fitness goals and the truth is, we all work harder in a class. The social aspect makes a big difference and so keep coming, work hard and you too will see the many positive differences our Nordic Walking sessions can do for you.   “Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

Path conditions

We do our best to take the safest routes on our walks but because we walk in the countryside etc, you will expect to find some paths on the muddy/slippy side this time of year.  The poles are great to help with balance but wearing the correct footwear is vitally important.   Give yourself space behind the person in front of you so you can see the terrain.   Thanks.
